Southern Samaritans

A few weeks ago, when I wrote this post, someone reminded me of a funny incident that happened to my mother and me a year or two ago. In light of that, I thought I'd might as well share it for your entertainment. :) Let me begin by saying that I live in the middle of nowhere. Literally. I live on a dirt road that lies somewhere between a one-red-light town and a five stop sign town (okay... there are more than five, but it doesn't have a red light). I don't really live within either city limits and it's about a five minute drive either way to reach an actual "city." My road is just one within the maze of desolate dirt roads lying outside the city limits and it can get a little confusing if you ever get lost back there. Alright. With the stage now set, I will share with you the story of how what began as a one and a half minute (at most) drive to my aunt's house around the corner turned into an hour and a half long rescue mission. Off we ...

Wakes and Other Such Events

I don't know about you, but I hate funerals. My Great Aunt Marietta loved them and I'm pretty sure she'd go to funerals just for the heck of it. If she bumped into them at Walmart and managed to get a name, she'd show up at their funeral. I never understood it because I pretty much have to be dragged to funerals and wakes. Honestly, I think wakes are weirder that funerals because you have to walk up there and look at the dead person and I find that to be just a tad bit ghoulish. Maybe that's just me. Regardless of how odd it may be, over the years I've had to come up with some way to cope with sad events -and grief in general. Surprise... It's through finding something to laugh about. For a while, this coping mechanism worked pretty well. I'd get dragged to funerals, I'd be polite, respectful, and appropriately solemn (depending on how well I knew the person and/or the family), and I'd be fine. I'd notice the pallbearer's toupee slip...

Ailurophobia: Why I have it, now.

Let me be very clear about one thing here before I write this. I am a dog person. I love dogs. Dogs love me. If I end up not getting married, I will probably become a Crazy Dog Lady.  Why do I get along so well with dogs? I don't know for sure, but part of it may be based upon a mutual dislike of cats. Don't get me wrong I don't absolutely hate cats or anything. I don't have the desire to run around killing the nasty felines, but I will say that they are not my preferred animal -and with good reason.   Cats pretty much always hate me. Until this past Friday, the above statement pretty much just meant that they don't want me petting them. They may hiss or occasionally scratch me if I get close to them, but it's usually no big deal because I try to respect their feelings and stay away from them. This past Friday, however, something went horribly wrong. I have a part-time job after school watching a special-needs child. It's a pre...

Why I Hate Estrogen

This was originally a response to a prompt on a blog I read several months ago. I don't know why this was the prompt, but I just found what I wrote and thought I'd share it again.  I don't think I need to explain what, exactly, estrogen brings about. Y'all know... This story happened on one of *those* days.   TMI? Idc. ;) We are sitting in the frozen yogurt shop thirty minutes before the weekly campus ministry meeting and my friend is telling me about how she and the guy she likes are FINALLY talking about dating. He did the most romantic thing ever last night.  I am the only single girl at our table and my coffee (yes... I get coffee at the yogurt shop) is too sweet (never thought I'd say that). Oddly enough, I'm more upset about the coffee than the singleness. I waited all day for this coffee and it's not right. This is tragic. I am sad.  We get up to leave and  my friend says, "I'm just so happy!" You know what? I'm suddenly ridiculously...

Brooms, Buicks, and The Elderly

You know those moments when you’re just standing by watching a scenario unfold and all you can say when it’s over is, “Umm… What?” These things happen to me all the time, but one particular moment that comes to mind for me was the time that my Great Aunt Marietta killed a snake at church… Okay. Why is this so significant? Well, there are a few factors that made this incident a little bit unusual and quite humorous. Allow me to explain. Several years ago, my little country church got on a low limb and almost shut the doors. It was a rough time and there didn’t seem to be much hope left –until a group of students from the local Baptist College came in and took over. They let God use them in every way and by his grace they were able to bring life back into the church. They also brought some pretty significant laughs –particularly the guys. One Sunday after church as we were all heading outside, we looked up to see a sizeable snake crawling up the front porch column. Na...

Why I'm Still Single (Chronicle of an Awkward Two Days)

Have you ever known someone that’s just awkward ? They don’t mean to be. They don’t want to be. They try NOT to be, but despite their best efforts, they just are . Folks, I am that someone. I am as awkward as the days are long. I used to see this awkwardness as a curse, but the longer I live with it, the more I’ve come to embrace it. Let’s be real, here. People like me make people who aren’t awkward laugh –and considering that I like to make people laugh, I think it’s worth it.   Of course, being “wonderfully awkward” (as my friend described me) has its obvious disadvantages. Plus, I have this theory… I can’t believe I’m actually blogging about this, but why not? Y’all, I am almost twenty, single, and (lately) worried about how I’m going to manage being a Crazy Cat Lady when I don’t like cats. I’ll probably just tweak it to Crazy Dog Lady to keep up with the awkward theme. That works, right? Anyway, I used to spend a shameful amount of time trying to figure out why I’m alm...

Signed, Sealed, and Delivered... to the Wrong Person

Have you ever known someone who just seems to self-sabotage everything they attempt? Well... I have been known to be a little bit like that. See? I'm a natural "helper." I love helping people with their problems and their goals. It's one of my traits I'm most grateful for, most of the time, until the guy I had a huge crush on came to one afternoon asking me to help him write a "love letter." Being the nice person that I am, I agreed, so during 7th period English we sat down to write this beautiful outpouring of love to a girl whose name we were not sure of, but knew that she was really tan with, short, shoulder length, dark brown (almost black) hair. Note: At the time we were in 7th grade and my friend rode the bus with this girl. That's where he fell in love with her. On the bus. The fact that he'd never actually spoken to her was irrelevant. So, we sat down and wrote this letter and let me just say... based upon the limited information ...

Amen... Thank You, Dear Jesus

Okay. Time for Funny Friday. :) Today I am going to draw from my virtually endless supply of church stories. Now before I say anything else, you should all know that I go to a small church. It also happens to be a family church. Between both my mom's family and my dad's family I was, at one point, related to all but two families in the church. This story takes place during that time.  It was Sunday night and my Uncle Mike was on a roll with his sermon. I mean he was serious... So serious that he was actually coming down from behind the pulpit. All you Baptists out there understand the significance of that, I'm sure. Anyway, on this particular evening, my Great Uncle Dallas (on my dad's side of the family) was feeling spunky and had decided to sit on the front pew. Again, Baptists, you can appreciate this. Unfortunately, however, his spunk only managed to get him to  the front pew. It didn't hold out to keep him awake... Does anyone see where this is going?  So, Uncl...

Grandmothers, Pants, and Potentials

Since today is Funny Friday's post coming late, I've decided to tell you about the time my grandmother disturbed the guy I had a crush on.  It was by birthday party and my best guy friend (I also happened to have a HUGE crush on him) showed up a little early. Like any normal person, I invited him inside and told him to sit down in the living room. I had to run outside for something and while I was gone, my mom brought my grandmother into the living room where the guy was.  At the time, my grandmother was in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (though we weren't aware that that's what it was) and she usually got a little unpredictable in the afternoons. She'd been living with us for a few months, so I was used to the odd things she'd say from time to time. Unfortunately, I forgot to warn my friend about the situation and when I got back to the living room I found that he'd been left alone with her.  I rushed in to try to rectify the situation, but by ...
